Artist statement

Christian Lepiez is a 3rd year Craft and Design student specifying in glass art at Sheridan College, as well as a practicing artist. I completed a high school co-op credit while working at Glen William's Glass studio, where my focus on the art blossomed. I am very interested in the form and function of an object and how well they play together and compliment one another. I also enjoy understanding the movement of glass, as well as symmetry and aesthetic. My ideas develop from experiences, memories, and passions. I consider myself to be a bit of everything; I am a collector, an observer, a traveler, and someone who seeks adventure.

I want to be able to get my ideas into an object that is 3-dimensional, and continue to create and release my emotions into the glass. I work in a very calm, thoughtless, Zen-like mode, however since the materials in glass often are worked in extreme time constraints, it’s a very delicate balance of patience and speed.

I like to keep my costs of materials low so I use as much recycled glass that I can, for example corning gun mount glass from the back of old televisions. My favorite tool is glass itself, glass can be used in so many different ways; so many that you can almost get by without using anything but the glass and gravity. Using less tools also minimizes marks and keeps the glass as clean as it can be.
